Gather materials

Do this

  1. Ingredient check: Grain present. Hops and both liquid/dry yeast in the fridge.
  2. Equipment check: Run through the minimum equipment check. Gather together or make sure you can easily find everything on brew day.
  3. Water check. Have 8 gallons of the best water you can find! Tap water is ok. Highly recommended:
    • Municipal water: Filter through a -current- fridge filter. Yes, it'll take a while and this is not a joke. When current (usually less than 6 months old) these filters effectively remove chlorine and chloramine. Put some Free Bird on and have a beer while you're at it. Even Denver water or cities with "good" water counts.
    • Hard water: If you know you have hard water: water with high minerals you can taste or water that easily stains showers/toilets etc., consider using RO/distilled water for brewing.
    • The best water will taste soft, has no mineral flavors, no chemical-like flavors or aromas, and could be described as "crisp."
